Mercedes is set to go on a killing spree, which will reportedly result in the elimination of all wagons and shooting brakes. They’re set to become the latest victims of the carpocalypse, but it appears there’s still a future for wagons elsewhere.
One of those homes is in Sweden, where Volvo appears to be plotting an electric estate. While officials wouldn’t go into specifics, Volvo’s Warren Davidson told WhichCar they’re not a company that disregards its heritage. He added that while “SUVs are extremely important to us … they’re not the only part of what we do.”
His sentiments were echoed by Volvo’s Head of Strategy and Program Management, Erik Severinson, who said “Some of our competitors have moved away from this kind of car, but we still see a strong market for it.” He added that Volvo is famous for its wagons, although Europeans are the only people who really buy them.

Despite that relatively limited market, there were strong hints about a future wagon. In particular, Warren told the publication “Without being specific about future products, I’m really excited.”
That suggests an electric wagon could be on the horizon. The model would presumably compete with the Audi A6 e-tron Avant, which is expected to arrive shortly after the sedan.

While that remains to be seen, it appears the flexibility and economies of scale enabled by Geely architectures will enable Volvo to keep wagons around in the future. That being said, there are more questions than answers.
