Ford’s Hot F-150 Lightning One-Off Could Be Named ‘Flash’

The intriguing high-performance Ford F-150 Lightning teased by Ford in February could be dubbed the F-150 Flash, based on a recent trademark filing.

It was recently discovered that Ford filed a patent for the name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for “automobiles, pickup trucks, electric vehicles, sport utility vehicles, and their structural parts.” While the patent doesn’t provide any detailed information about the vehicle that will use the name, it’s fair to assume that it’ll be the electric version of the F-150 pickup, Car Buzz notes.

Ford previewed a special version of the F-150 Lightning shortly after announcing its deal with the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team. A single image posted to Twitter by Ford chief executive Jim Farley showed him lifting up a cover to the front of the truck while standing next to Daniel Ricciardo.

Farley confirmed at the time that the truck would form part of the brand’s EV performance demonstrator line-up that’s already led to the creation of the Mustang Mach-E 1400, the 2,000 hp Ford Transit SuperVan 4, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, and the F-100 Eliminator.

This teaser didn’t offer us a particularly good look at the car. However, what it did show is that it has been equipped with a unique front end with a distinctive bumper with new air intakes. We could also see glimpses of a special grey and blue livery alongside the white paint adorning most of the bodywork. Flared wheel arches were also visible in the teaser.

Given that each and every one of Ford’s other EV performance demonstrators has multiple electric motors, it’s safe to assume the F-150 Lightning will follow suit. Power figures remain a mystery but given the other demonstrators (excluding the F-100 Eliminator) have had 1,400 hp or more, we think it’s safe to assume the F-150 will also have a four-digit horsepower output.
