SAIC brand Roewe revealed a new electrified sedan in China, called D7. The model is available in EV and PHEV forms which are visually differentiated thanks to unique styling cues.

Both variants measure 4,890 mm (192.5 inches) long, which is 90 mm (3.5 inches) shorter than the Tesla Model S, and have a wheelbase of 2,810 mm (110.6 inches). The exterior was revealed by SAIC Design alongside a few specifications, while the detailed presentation will follow at a later date.

The profiles and rear ends of the PHEV and EV are essentially the same, with the greenhouse and sleek surfacing reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz EQ range. However, their faces are completely different, with the PHEV getting larger LED headlights and interconnected bumper intakes instead of the EV’s cleaner looks. Another change is the conventional door handles of the PHEV which don’t look as cool as the flush door handles of the EV.

More important changes are hiding under the skin, despite the shared architecture. The Roewe D7 DMH (dual-motor hybrid) comes fitted with SAIC’s super hybrid system. The ICE has a thermal efficiency greater than 43%, and works together with dual electric motors. The low fuel consumption of the engine and the battery of an undisclosed capacity allows a combined range of 1,400 km (870 miles). The EV-only range is 125 km (78 miles) measured under the CLTC protocols.

On the other hand, the Roewe D7 EV has a simpler all-electric layout with a single electric motor. Chinese media report that the latter will be available in two different outputs, producing either 194 hp (145 kW / 197 PS) or 208 hp (155 kW / 211 PS). The battery packs are also different with lithium iron phosphate or lithium cells offering a CLTC range of 510 km (317 miles) or 610 km (379 miles) respectively.

Both variants of the Roewe D7 will launch in China later this year. They will inaugurate Roewe’s “D” series of models which is set to include eight launches of electrified models (sedans, SUVs, and MPVs) in the next three years.
