A comprehensive update for the Tesla Model 3 is just around the corner and once again, a disguised prototype has been filmed on the move. While most of the key design details about the new car are hidden from view, there’s already quite a lot we know about the new car, codenamed ‘Project Highland.’

This clip was filmed by Redditor gui6a and shows the new Model 3 being driven in what appears to be California. Tesla has bathed the car’s front fascia in black cloth while the entire rear fascia is also shielded from view. While we’re unable to see anything new with the car’s front end, we are able to see it from the rear where part of the redesigned taillights are on display.

It appears as though the taillights of the new Model 3 will be more complex and advanced than those of the current car. Amber turn signals are also visible on this prototype.

In June, a report emerged indicating that the new Model 3 is receiving the most significant mid-life update of any Tesla model. While we know that significant changes will be made to the front and rear fascias, the car manufacturer is also expected to overhaul the interior. CarScoops understands that the cabin will be more similar to those of the Model S and Model X and that there will also be an increased focus on recycled materials. An ambient lighting system may also come standard.

Tesla won’t just call it a day after making exterior and interior changes either. Some mechanical changes are also expected, the most significant of which could be the implementation of a steer-by-wire system, similar to the system that Toyota and Lexus developed for the all-electric Lexus RZ. This will also make Tesla’s yoke much easier to use.

It is not yet clear when the new model will debut but we expect to see it showcased before the end of this year. As for when it will hit the production line, that’s another question entirely.
