Ford and Tesla are like a pair of squabbling siblings. They just can’t stop taking little potshots at each other, such as last month, when Ford CEO Jim Farley said Tesla’ Cybertruck was “cool” but not for “real people who do real work.” Perhaps in response, someone in Tesla’s R&D department has been hard at work covering a Cybertruck prototype in a wrap to make it look like a Ford F-150 Lightning.

Not that anyone would ever confuse the two unless perhaps they thought they were looking at an F-150 that had been hit by a pair of pianos dropped from a 10-storey skyscraper. The pyramid-shape roofline couldn’t could from anything but a Cybertruck and the wrap’s round wheelarches are rather ruined by the Tesla’s real squared-off openings.

One commenter on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum said the wrap’s fake F-150 door handles made him wish the Tesla had real door handles, and you know he could be right. Call me mad, but while Tesla has clearly wrapped its prototype for fun, it’s arguably shown that the Cybertruck could look better if its wasn’t trying so hard to be different just for the sake of it.

But even more interesting than the wrap is what else the leaked shop image shows, and that’s the Cybertruck’s frunk – or lack of one. The F-150 Lightning, you might recall, has a huge frunk made possible by it retaining the ‘boring’ shape of a traditional gas-powered pickup. That detail finally solves the perennial truck problem of not having a nice clean storage area for suitcases and shopping that doesn’t impact on the bed space in the rear.

The Cybertruck’s cab-forward stance and very short front overhang meant it was never going to have a huge frunk, but this image has us wondering if Tesla will offer one at all, or whether the area will be reserved for access to the truck’s guts and perhaps a charging cable. If there is a frunk, it looks like it might be a relatively small vertical space, rather than a long, flat one like the F-150 offers.

What do you think of this Cybertruck Lightning mashup? Do you think its looks better or worse than the naked Cybertruck and how big a deal do you think that tiny frunk is?
