In recent years, we have seen electromods based on all kinds of classics, but few, if anyone, must have expected the first-gen NSX to be among them. Still, an EV-converted example of the sought-after Japanese sportscar exists in the US, combining a Tesla-sourced electric motor and Nissan batteries.

The owner of the unique Acura NSX-EV is Geoff Budd from Redwood City in California, who showcased his build in the Holley High Voltage Experience 2022 promising to have it ready and running for this year’s event. Before purists start winning about the donor vehicle of choice, this high-mileage NSX came without an engine at the time of purchase, after its original V6 had been swapped for a Honda K-series four-cylinder motor.

Budd bought his 1994 Acura NSX in March 2022 when it already had 229,000 miles (368,540 km) on the odometer. He also bought an electric motor from a 2014 Tesla Model S, mounting it backward in midship position using custom mounts. The photos show there is plenty of room in the engine bay, since the e-motor is much smaller than the original combustion engine. In last year’s event, the NSX-EV was showcased with a temporary battery but the owner planned to install a larger battery pack sourced from a Nissan Leaf allowing for a decent range.

The owner estimates that the finished Acura NSX-EV will be 400 pounds (181 kg) heavier than the ICE-powered original which weighed 3,020 lb (1,370 kg). Still, he hopes to achieve a balanced 50:50 weight distribution, helping with the handling credentials. In terms of performance, the electric motor will certainly be more powerful than the 270 hp (201 kW / 274 PS) of the stock 3.0-liter V6, smoking the rear tires of the electromoded NSX.

We hope to see the Acura NSX-EV in action at the Holley High Voltage Experience 2023 which will be held in San Luis Obispo, California, on July 29 and 30.
