Mercedes-Benz continues the development of the upcoming CLA EV and while its prototypes are still bathed in camouflage, these images provide us with our best look at it thus far.
A number of changes are being made to the Mercedes-Benz lineup with three of its seven compact models being axed. The CLA will survive but to ensure it meets the demands of current-day customers, an all-electric version will be offered alongside the next-generation CLA combustion model. Our spy photographers understand that Mercedes-Benz will unveil a concept version of the car at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich next month.
Mercedes-Benz is designing the CLA EV as a rival to the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. It is expected to be slightly larger than the A-Class Sedan and will clearly have quite a sleek and attractive look. While the camouflage of this prototype does a good job of hiding many of the design intricacies, we can see that the front end will adopt a set of attractive headlights with LED daytime running lights positioned diagonally. It appears a faux front grille will also be present and support the large three-pointed star emblem.

Much like the outgoing CLA, we can see that the CLA sedan has sharp character lines running along the lower half of the doors as well as a third crease running from the tip of the headlights, across the doors, and through to the taillights. Speaking of the taillights, they appear somewhat similar in shape to the current CLS (and other Mercedes-Benz models) and it’s possible they will be joined by a light bar.

We do not have any spy shots showing the interior of the new CLA EV sedan but Mercedes-Benz will probably go one of two ways with its design. The first option is for it to adopt a similar design to the current EQA SUV with twin screens running horizontally across the dashboard and a familiar array of circular air vents. The second possibility is for it to adopt a similar ‘Hyperscreen’ digital dashboard to the likes of the E-Class, EQE, and EQS, although that seems less likely given its more affordable price point.
