Citroen launched a new special edition of the flagship C5 X, based on the highest trim level with the plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Citroen C5 X Hypnos is named after the Greek god of sleep, but its goal isn’t to make you sleepy but to help you relax with its comfortable and serene cabin.

The highlight of the exterior is the Eclipse Blue shade which changes character depending on the lighting conditions. The new color is combined with Infrared accents on the decorative side gills and the C5 X emblem on the tailgate. The 19-inch AeroX alloy wheels are finished in Onyx Black, while the roof is also dark-themed. For those who don’t like blue, there is the option of a Platinum Grey.

Inside, we find light-colored perforated leather upholstery, grey Alcantara headrests, and Infrared labels featuring Hypnos lettering. Those are combined with Karuunfaux wood inserts on the dashboard and the doors, a special treatment for the glossy black center console which gains xenon bronze lines, and Hypnos-branded floor mats. The signature plush seats with heated, massaging, and ventilated functions come standard, as with the glass roof and a hi-fi audio system.

The special edition is exclusively available with the 225 ë-EAT8 plug-in hybrid which comprises a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine and a single electric motor, producing a combined 222 hp (165 kW / 225 PS). Power is transmitted to the front axle through an 8-speed automatic, while the 12.4 kWh battery is good for an EV-only range of 50 km (31 miles). More importantly, the Hypnos comes standard with the Advanced Comfort active suspension, offering Citroen’s equivalent of Rolls-Royce’s Magic Carpet Ride.

In a quest to deflect any jokes or even safety concerns about the model’s association with sleep, Citroen says that driving a C5 X Hypnos is “a real invitation to relax and unwind, while remaining fully aware of your surroundings”, hoping that driver and passengers will “restore energy” during each journey with its comfort-oriented flagship. Notably, this is not the first time that Citroen used the Hypnos moniker as it was introduced in a hybrid crossover concept back in 2008.

The Citroen C5 X Hypnos is available to order in Europe starting today, September 4. The special edition costs €58,400 ($63,047) in France, making it one of the priciest offerings of the otherwise budget-oriented Stellantis brand. Availability will be limited, with the first customer deliveries expected in early 2024.
