When your work truck is actually an F1 car, you could be forgiven for finding street-legal performance machinery a big yawn in comparison. But Lewis Hamilton’s love for supercars is well documented and he seems to find plenty to smile about in a new promo posted to AMG’s YouTube channel that shows him behind the wheel of the firm’s road cars.

But how could you not smile when presented with a selection of AMG’s latest hotrods, including the AMG One and new GT coupe, and carte blanche to torch some tires on a huge asphalt playground? The video shows Hamilton and his F1 co-star, George Russell, working their way through those two-door AMGs plus the new C63 S E Performance sedan and its S63 E Performance big brother.

Taking a leaf out of the old Top Gear challenge playbook, the drivers are told that they must each choose two sets of keys and prove their prowess in a slalom and holding a big drifty slide. To be honest, it’s a flimsy premise because there’s no actual judging process and neither does either driver offer any meaningful commentary about any of the cars they’re driving. And is it just us or does it look like the video editors have snipped out a couple of spins to save a few blushes?

That said, it’s still worth a watch to see the various cars in action and hear how different they sound from one another. And the genuine look of shock on Russell’s face when he mats the right pedal on the AMG One and feels his spine being pressed into the seatback is a great reminder that the 1,049 hp ( 1,064 PS) hypercar’s F1 connection is more than just marketing waffle. The current Nurburgring lap record holder features an F1-derived engine.

The other thing thing that appears authentic is the camaraderie between Hamilton and Russell. They might not be best buddies off-camera, and their starkly different outfits and hairstyles says there’s more separating them than the 13-year age gap, but you get the feeling that there’s a stronger bond there than there ever was between Hamilton and Fernando Alonso or Nico Rosberg.
