Road rage is a serious problem that can lead to serious consequences. A new study aims to rank all 50 states from the most prone to road rage to the least. The results might surprise you and they take into account a number of factors that contribute to road rage experiences.
There’s more to road rage than people having a bad day and perhaps driving poorly. According to a new study from Forbes, there are at least five different major factors. They include heavy traffic, already feeling stressed, running late, already feeling angry, and feeling tired. Here’s a quick breakdown of where the study says you’re most likely to experience those instances.
Number one on the list is Arizona with a score of 100 out of 100. Next up is Rhode Island with a score of 98.46 followed closely by West Virginia (97.82), Virginia (96.97), and Oklahoma (96.49).

To calculate those scores, Forbes surveyed 10,000 licensed drivers (at least 200 in each state) and weighted different factors like whether a driver had been forced off of the road or another driver exited their vehicle to begin an altercation. Then it compared and ranked the scores state by state.

The most courteous states kick off with Delaware (0 out of 100) where the worst offense most drivers have dealt with is being insulted or threatened while driving. Idaho takes silver with a score of just 1.76 followed by South Dakota (7.87), Louisiana (9.26), and Wyoming (9.31).
City streets are where most drivers experience road rage. They say that 29.18 percent of their experiences with it are there. They also say that just over a quarter of the road rage experiences they have (26.59 percent) are on the highway.
Just under 15% of the time they’re in parking lots followed by intersections with 12.36 percent. Rural roads round out the top five spaces with 6.99 percent of incidents recorded.
Notably, Arizona had one example of extremely violent road rage pop up in the news over the last month. In that case, the driver of what is believed to be a Chrysler shot and injured another driver. The injured driver went to the hospital and the offending driver is still on the run.
