Toyota GR86 40th Anniversary Limited Is A Japan-Only Tribute To The AE86

Toyota announced the 2024 MY updates for the GR86 sportscar in Japan with the highlight being the new “40th Anniversary Limited”, celebrating four decades since the debut of the original AE86.

The new version of the sportscar is the Japanese equivalent of the North American Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition, featuring the same chassis upgrades with slightly different styling. Starting with the important bits, the anniversary special benefits from a new set of ZF Sachs shock absorbers and ventilated disc brakes by Brembo. Those are also available as an option for the SZ and RZ trims, mirroring the “Performance Package” of the U.S.-spec equivalent.

The 40th Anniversary Limited is based on the highest-spec RZ trim but gets some unique exterior and interior touches highlighting its connection with the AE86 Sprinter Trueno. Those are limited to a set of black decals on the doors featuring “since 1983” and “40th” lettering. The same logo can be found on the door card embroidery and on the GR-branded floor mats.

The special edition is only available in white or red exterior shades, while the interior combines black and red upholstery. There are a few more differences compared to the RZ trim, as the ducktail spoiler is finished in crystal black silica (instead of body color), and the 18-inch aluminum wheels are painted in a dark gray metallic shade (instead of matte black).

Toyota upgraded the safety credentials of all manual-equipped GR86s, adding the Subaru Eyesight ADAS suite as standard equipment, although the Blind Spot monitor system is optional on the SZ and standard on the RZ. Finally, the VSC Control system has been optimized on all trims, alongside improved electronic throttle characteristics.

All trims of the JDM-Spec Toyota GR86 are powered by the same naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter boxer engine producing 232 hp (173 kW / 235 PS) and 250 Nm (184.4 lb-ft) of torque which is slightly increased compared to the U.S.-spec model. The mill is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmitting power to the rear axle.

Pricing for the GR86 in Japan starts from as low as ¥2,916,000 ($19,661) for the bare-bones RC trim. On the other end of the spectrum, the flagship GR86 RZ 40th Anniversary Limited is priced at ¥3,822,000 ($25,769) with a manual gearbox and at ¥3,920,000 ($26,430) with an automatic, while its availability is limited to 200 units. Toyota will accept orders through the dedicated GR Garage network between September 25 and October 9, with the lucky 200 owners being selected via a lottery and deliveries starting in February 2024.

The 2024 Toyota GR86 and the anniversary special will make their public premiere at the Fuji Speedway on September 24, next to the 2024 Subaru BRZ twin which also has a new STI Sport trim.
