BMW and Mercedes-Benz reported solid sales increases for their battery-electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2023.

During the third quarter, the BMW and Mini brands collectively sold 93,931 battery-electric vehicles around the world. This represents a 79.6% increase compared to the same period last year. The BMW brand alone sold 83,211 BEVs during Q3, a 100.3% increase from last year. Between January and September, BMW sold a total of 217,138 BEVs.

The carmaker says that the i4 is proving particularly popular, as is the iX1. BMW notes that it has also received positive customer feedback on the new i5. A total of 545,941 BMW-branded vehicles were sold in Q3, a 6.2% increase and bringing the total for the first 9 months of the year to 1,621,267, a 5.7% jump compared to the same period last year.

When counting BMW and Mini sales together, Asia is the company’s largest market, accounting for 783,189 vehicles in the first three quarters, a 2% increase. Following Asia is Europe with 670,119 sales and the Americas with 338,093 sales.

Mercedes-Benz is also selling more battery-electric vehicles than it has at any time in the past. It sold a total of 61,600 BEVs in the third quarter, a 66% increase driven largely by a 108% increase in EQA sales and a 96% increase in EQB sales. The EQS and EQS SUV are also proving popular with 26,300 examples sold this year.

For the January-September period, Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 174,500 BEVs, 82% more than last year. Total sales for the Mercedes-Benz Cars range topped out at 510,600 in Q3 and while that is a 4% drop from Q3 2022, the firm’s year-to-date sales of 1,529,800 vehicles is 2% up on the 1,504,500 it had sold YTD 2022.
