Infiniti believes the sedan segment remains very relevant in the United States

Infiniti’s first all-electric vehicle will be a sedan inspired by the Vision Qe Concept unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show this week. While it is no surprise that Infiniti is getting into the EV game, some are surprised it is doing so with a sedan rather than an SUV. According to the firm’s senior director of operations, there is a good reason for this.
While speaking with Motor1 at the event in Tokyo, Bob Welby noted that the sedan segment remains very important in the United States. He also said the production version of the Infiniti Vision Qe Concept will have a key design aesthetic that links with the history of the brand.

“For the US market, the sedan segment is still a very relevant segment,” Welby said. “We have a ton of history, and heritage, and hugely passionate fans… so with that kind of passion, we’re always getting asks for that kind of piece… Design has always been kind of a standout for us… you also see some strong elements in our history about the ‘joy of driving.’ So, there are some cues there that I think you are certainly going to expect to show up in our DNA.”
The Vision Qe Concept doesn’t just serve as a preview of the brand’s upcoming electric sedan but also its new ‘Artistry in Motion’ design language. This new styling direction is particularly evident at the front where there a LED light elements inspired by piano keys, a three-dimensional illuminated badge, and LED lights rising from the splitter to the main headlamps. Unfortunately, Infiniti has not yet provided any specifics about the production model’s electric powertrain.
Infiniti will follow up the Vision Qe concept with an electric SUV with Welby noting that this model will also act as an important model in its electric range.
“SUVs have become another emerging strength of ours over the past decade… and we teased that last night with the QXe concept as well,” he confirmed. “So that’s absolutely going to be part of our story.”
