Lengthy recharging times are a pain point for electric vehicles, but it could become a thing of the past as Polestar and StoreDot are exploring extreme fast charging (XFC) batteries. These could deliver 100 miles (161 km) of range in five minutes and without any battery degradation.

As part of the effort, the two companies have embarked on an “advanced engineering project to technically explore and demonstrate how XFC battery cell technology can be applied to an existing platform, and show what a production-level solution could look like.”

This will be demonstrated with a Polestar 5 prototype, which will showcase “production ready” extreme fast charging technology. The model is slated to debut next year and include “key integrations such as … engineering design and cooling.”

The prototype is the result of an ongoing strategic partnership and comes following an investment in the battery company, which claims to have “revolutionized the conventional li-ion battery by innovating and synthesizing proprietary organic and inorganic compounds.” While StoreDot’s extreme fast charging batteries sound impressive, they’re already eyeing improvements as three minutes could give you 100 miles (161 km) of range in 2028, while the same could occur in two minutes in 2032.

StoreDot CEO Dr Doron Myersdorf said, “We are extremely pleased and proud that Polestar aims to be the first automotive company to showcase our extreme fast charging battery cells in a full-scale, driveable prototype.” He added, “We still have lots of work to do to fully integrate our systems into a production car, but our teams are already fully engaged, and we will be demonstrating those results in the coming months.”

His sentiments were echoed by Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath, who remarked “StoreDot’s pioneering extreme fast charging batteries, combined with our upcoming top-of-the-line electric powertrain, can revolutionize the ownership experience for EV owners with the ability to recharge in minutes.”
