Key fobs might be small, but when a company introduces a flagship model as brand-shifting as the Celestiq, they can make for big news. Recently, images have emerged suggesting that the new Cadillac sedan might feature a key similar to those found in the rest of the lineup. However, the brand itself has now informed Carscoops about what to expect, and it isn’t what you might have seen.

On Tuesday, GMAuthority published a trio of photographs of what it believes is the key fob for the new Cadillac Celestiq. For a hand-crafted super saloon with a base price of $340,000 (and up to an absurd nearly $1 million if you get if from Neiman Marcus), it doesn’t look very flashy at all. In fact, it looks like just about every other key in the Cadillac family save for some distinct changes that we’ll discuss in a moment.

In an effort to figure out what we’re actually looking at, we reached out to Cadillac directly, and here’s what a spokesperson told Carscoops:

“I spoke with my engineering team and what I can confirm is that we intend on painting every part black on the CELESTIQ key fob. Each fob will also come with a metal NFC card as we distinguish CELESTIQ as the flagship for the brand.”

Just to clarify we asked if the fobs in the piece from GMAuthority might be prototype keys and Cadillac confirmed that. “Correct. The production key fob will differ and offer a more premium look (e.g painting every part black),” the spokesperson told us. So from what we gather the key fob itself will indeed look pretty similar in terms of shape but the materials used should end up being considerably more high-end.

Just to clarify, we inquired whether the key fobs featured in the GMAuthority piece might be prototype keys, and Cadillac has confirmed this to be the case. A spokesperson stated, “Correct. The production key fob will differ and offer a more premium look(e.g painting every part black).” So, as we understand it, the key fob itself will indeed look pretty similar in terms of shape, but the materials used should end up being considerably more high-end.

From what we can see in the images in question, there is at least one notable difference, that being a door opener button. Beyond that, this does indeed look like many other Cadillac key fobs. Interestingly enough, it comes close to resembling a Blackwing key. Those cars are available with a fob that is color-matched to the brake caliper paint color.

Clearly, Cadillac has a few other ideas about how to make the Celestiq key stand out. We’ll bring you the latest once they finally do show off the production key fob.

Note: The lead image shows the standard Cadillac key fob, not the prototype one from GMAuthority.
