Chopping the roof off this Testarossa could turn it into the ultimate 1980s supercar

Few Ferrari models are as iconic as the Testarossa but despite the car’s legendary status within the industry, the owner of one example from Andorra has commissioned Dutch coachbuilder Niels van Roij Design to transform it into a targa.
The coachbuilder has a wealth of experience creating wild one-off creations based around iconic models. Earlier this year it designed a Land Rover Defender convertible and last month, announced plans to restomod an original Audi TT Roadster. While it hasn’t announced all that many details about the Testarossa Targa at this early stage, it has previewed some of the design process on social media.

Given that Ferrari itself never built a droptop version of the Testarossa, the coachbuilder is having to start from scratch with its latest project. In these photos, Niels van Roij himself is seen looking at the Testarossa, presumably talking with his team about the best ways to chop the roof off the 1980s mid-engined supercar.
The full extent of the changes being prepared by the coachbuilder isn’t known. It could simply lob off the car’s roof and call it a day but given that it intends on it being a targa, it will likely have to make extensive modifications to not only the roof but also the fenders and shoulder lines. One particularly intriguing photo shows tape running diagonally from the roof to the rear decklid, perhaps suggesting that this is the new shape the car will adopt.
It remains to be seen if the Testarossa’s roof will be retractable as engineering such a roof would be quite a laborious process and also necessitate extensive work to the engine bay of the Ferrari.
