The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 is what Dodge calls the “most powerful muscle car in the world.” Does that mean that it’s quick enough to beat what many consider to be the world’s fastest production sedan, the Tesla Model S Plaid in a drag race? There’s only one way to find out.

This video comes to us from Brooks over at DragTimes where he brought out his own Tesla Model S Plaid for the challenge. Neither of these cars needs an introduction, but here’s a quick reminder of what they’re packing anyway. The Tesla makes 1,020 hp (760 kW) and weighs in at 4,800 pounds (2177 kg). The Dodge makes 1,025 hp (764 kW) when running on E85 gasoline and weighs 4,275 pounds (1939 kW).

The big difference though is that the Model S Plaid is a sedan and happens to put that power down with AWD whereas the Demon 170 has just two doors and has to make do with RWD only. That additional traction shows up immediately in race one as the Tesla rockets off to a big lead and ultimately manages to maintain it through the quarter mile.

In race two things change up a bit. The Demon 170 pops a hard wheelie and gets excellent traction. It actually manages to get a nose ahead of the sedan too. Despite that, the Tesla comes around the Dodge at the big end and completes the race in 9.3 seconds to the Dodge’s 9.7 seconds. Those are both 0.1-second improvements on the results from race one so it would seem that both drivers are getting quicker.

Race three is a wash as the Demon 170 has some issues off the line. It launches well but as soon as it gets into second gear it loses traction and the race is over. The Plaid is gone, the Demon 170 driver backs out and we have a clear-cut winner for now. If there’s any clear indication here it’s that the Demon is a handful and the Plaid is sort of a point-and-shoot tool that’s hard to mess up.
