Soon after it was confirmed that The Grand Tour will end after two forthcoming specials start streaming on Amazon Prime, James May has said he is open to another project with co-hosts Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson.

May recently spoke with the BBC’s Radio 4 program and acknowledged that the trio has indeed finished filming the latest special “for now” and that this technically makes him “unemployed.” Limited details about the remaining two episodes of The Grand Tour are known but we do know that one of them was filmed in Zimbabwe and will be released next year.

“We’ve got two [episodes of The Grand Tour] in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see,” May said.

Interestingly, May believes that now is an excellent time to make a program about cars but believes the car show itself needs reinvention.

“I do think that despite us obviously coming to the end of our time doing this and the cancellation of Top Gear, there has never been a better time [for there to be a motoring programme],” he said. “Things like the future of autonomous cars, new means of powering cars, a change of general attitudes towards cars and driving, there’s never been a better time for a car show. And the car show itself needs reinvention.”

In November, Amazon’s head of unscripted programs in the UK, Fozia Khan, acknowledged that her team was “thinking about” how The Grand Tour could live on, potentially with new presenters.

Fortunately, Clarkson, Hammond, and May won’t be leaving our TVs for good. Amazon is gearing up to release season 3 of Clarkson’s Farm and has already commissioned a fourth season of the show. Additionally, James May continues to host the Our Man In… series and Hammond has a program on Discovery+ about his car restoration business.
