The annual Tokyo Auto Salon is set to kick off on January 12, and ahead of the event, Mugen has provided a sneak peek at two body kits it has designed for the current FL5-generation Honda Civic Type R.

At this point, only two images of the bodykits have been revealed, but they offer a glimpse of the significant modifications made to the hot hatch to make it visually distinct. The first kit, named ‘Group A,’ is the more understated of the two but still presents a considerably more aggressive appearance compared to a standard FL5 Type R, reminiscent of the flamboyant FK8 model it replaced.

Changes made to the front start with a bold carbon fiber splitter and new shrouds on the air curtains. We can also see that the car has been fitted with distinctive silver wheels and is rocking extended rocker panels, further adding to the dramatic design. A new rear wing is also visible and while we don’t yet have any photos of the Honda’s rear end, we suspect alterations have also been made to the bumper. Those who think the changes made to the Group A package may find the Group B version to be perfect.

Like the Group A, the second kit includes a bold new front splitter and front bumper shrouds but has also been fitted with a carbon fiber hood with an enlarged air extractor and new louvers on the sides. The front wheel arches also have Porsche 911 GT3 RS-inspired louvers and we can see a set of even more prominent rocker panels. The same rear wing as the Group A is also visible.

Plenty of performance-focused parts are also being developed by Mugen. These include upgraded dampers, 19-inch BBS forged wheels, stainless steel and titanium exhaust systems, and upgraded brakes. The firm has also developed some interior upgrades, including a revised steering wheel, new bucket seats, and a handful of carbon fiber trimmings.
