Hyundai and Kia aren’t the only vehicles getting SmartThings integration as Samsung has announced SmartThings Energy will soon work with Tesla products.
As the name suggests, SmartThings Energy is less about controlling your smart home and more focused on the things that power it. As such, it can connect to Tesla’s Powerwall battery, solar inverter, and wall charger. It also goes without saying that vehicles are also involved.
Samsung says the integration was made possible through Tesla’s open APIs and will “… contribute to Samsung’s ultimate goal of enabling more convenient, seamless home experiences for consumers.” While that doesn’t sound too exciting, Samsung’s Chanwoo Park said “Tesla Energy’s customers can now manage and monitor the power status of their homes through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices in addition to the Tesla app, ensuring more access and connectivity.”

Samsung added that customers can better prepare for power disruptions and outages as SmartThings Energy works with the Powerwall’s Storm Watch function. This means customers can be alerted to extreme weather events via smartphones and connected Samsung TVs. This will give them plenty of time to activate the AI Energy Mode, which aims to maximize backup energy stored in the Powerwall battery.
Samsung will be demoing the Tesla integration at CES, but the technology is still in development. That being said, the company is targeting a launch in the second quarter of 2024.
If you’re less concerned about your home’s energy, you might want to check out the SmartThings integration in Hyundai and Kia vehicles. It puts the smart into smart home as drivers will be able to activate an Away Mode in their car, which will turn off their home’s lights, run a robotic vacuum, and dial back the furnace or air conditioner.
