Rental car agency Hertz made waves when it made a big purchase of Tesla vehicles back in 2021. Now, it’s come time for the company to sell off some of the higher-mileage cars and there are deals to be had. Of course, a used electric vehicle with lots of miles on the clock might not be a deal at all.

As of this writing, Hertz has almost 400 Teslas available to buy through its Rent2Buy program. Pricing is transparent and haggle-free. Those interested can rent the car for up to three days at a reduced rate to check it out and see how it fits with their lifestyle. Should they decide to buy the car, they can do so remotely and they’ll get the rental fee back as part of the deal.

In the case of these Tesla models, we’re talking about cars that could cost as little as $17,700. Most often those types of prices only apply to the Model 3 Standard Range Plus sedan. When new, it had an EPA estimated range of 263 miles and a 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 5.3 seconds. If these cars come anywhere near those figures it’s an interesting proposition given that price tag.

In addition, it’s worth noting that these might be eligible for a federal tax credit of $4,000. If that’s the case then we’re talking about a generally well-regarded car with great safety ratings and decent range for under $20,000 once everything is factored in. As Teslarati points out, it might even be an indication that other Hertz EVs like the Polestar 2 could be lined up for future deals.

Keep in mind though that while these cars are generally pretty inexpensive on the front end, long-term maintenance might be more pricey. Tesla offers a 100,000-mile warranty on the battery and Hertz also says that it’ll offer a 12-month, 12,000-mile limited warranty.

Out of warranty, battery and drive unit replacements can be prohibitively expensive. Of course, buying any luxury vehicle with high mileage tends to be the same story. They’re cheap to purchase and expensive to maintain so Tesla isn’t alone there.
