The Subaru Impreza 22B STi is arguably one of the Japanese brand’s most iconic models. It was created to commemorate the company’s 40th anniversary and third consecutive victories in the WRC manufacturer’s titles. Now, one of the just 424 examples ever built is available for auction here in the USA.
Introduced in late 1997 exclusively in right-hand drive, the Impreza 22B STi was never officially offered in the United States, making this offering quite unique. Subaru produced 400 units for the Japanese market, all of which sold out within days. Additionally, 24 were manufactured for export markets, including 16 for the UK, 5 for Australia, and 3 prototypes.
Like just about every other Subaru Impreza from this era, this one has some modifications. Gone are the factory wheels and the factory wing but in their place are near-factory replacements. The interior sports a bolt-in roll cage. The blue paint almost looks like a factory option. There are a couple of other subtle changes too. The steering wheel isn’t original, neither is the parking brake handle. Despite the modifications, we still expect this car to go for a pretty penny.

The 22B left its mark in the Impreza lineage, boasting the now-infamous flared fenders, which are 3.2 inches wider than on a normal Impreza. The hood features a larger hood scoop as well as two unique hood vents on each side. Famously, the changes weren’t only skin deep as they are in so many other “performance” versions of other cars today.
Under the hood is a 2.2-liter turbocharged flat-four engine with a redline of 7,900 rpm. According to Subaru at the time, it made 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS), although it’s believed that the actual peak output was closer to 350 horsepower. It also has special Bilstein shocks at each corner along with big Brembo brakes. There are rumors that those shocks and the engine displacement came together to give the 22B its designation.

What’s very clear though is that this car will likely trade hands for well beyond $100,000. Almost a year ago, another 22B went over the auction block on BringATrailer for $226,000. It had 115,000 miles on the odometer. This one on Cars & Bids, while not entirely stock, has just 48,000 miles on it and could, in theory, be returned to factory original condition without too much hassle.
