A Tesla Model S Plaid can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2 seconds, which is about the same time some fairly swift ICE-powered cars take to reach half that speed. And because the tri-motor drivetrain makes so little noise and has no gears to thump through, it really is deceptively rapid.

One minute you could be crawling through a parking lot at walking pace and the next you could be crawling out of a wrecked EV having broken the freeway speed limit without having even left the lot, never mind hitting the freeway.

That’s what appears to have happened to the driver in this video posted to social media. Though we can’t find any concrete proof to back it up, the incident allegedly involves an 18-year old man test driving a Model S at his local CarMax, and seemingly maxing the EV down the narrow strip of asphalt separating two rows of cars. Text on the video suggest the driver worked at CarMax (either directly or as a contractor), though, again, we can’t be sure.

The footage starts with the Model S tearing past the camera, which can barely pan around in time to keep it in frame. You can see that the Tesla hasn’t traveled far before reaching the midway point and it’s already going crazily quick. And by the time the Tesla’s rear is in shot we can already see that the brake lights are lit, but either the driver isn’t pushing that middle pedal hard enough or he simply runs out of space, because while we don’t get to see the impact, we do get to see the gory aftermath.

The front of the Model S is completely destroyed, and it’s made a mess of at least two other vehicles in the process, including a Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 and what looks like a Volvo XC60. Replacing and repairing the wrecked cars must have cost well over $100,000, and perhaps two or even three times that.

Fortunately, it seems the driver escaped the mess without physical injury, but any hopes of him avoiding people finding out about the disaster crashed and burned along with the car.

“Just don’t show too many people,” we hear him implore the guy doing the filming. The fact that it’s now all over Reddit, Twitter and Instagram, says smartphone guy had a very different plan.
