Nio ET9’s Active Suspension Can Shake It Like It’s Hot

Modern EVs can do a lot more than drive around in silence, especially when it comes to flagship models like the Nio ET9. In a new video published on Chinese social media Weibo, the Tesla Model S rival from Nio highlights its “Sky Ride” intelligent chassis system by shaking off snow and ice from its bodywork, without any human intervention.

Just a couple of months after Porsche published a CGI video of a dancing Panamera, Nio struck back with a more practical use of an active suspension system. Using the independently controlled shock absorbers, a camouflaged prototype of the ET9 uncovers itself from the snow, performing a similar trick to dogs and other four-legged animals.

Nio’s intelligent chassis system is called Sky Ride and includes four dedicated hydraulic pumps independently controlling each wheel. Besides shaking the bodywork, the sophisticated suspension can also keep it level when driving on rough terrain. This is showcased in another video where the Nio ET9 takes the role of a waiter, carrying a pyramid of glasses while driving over speed bumps. Finally, a third video titled “high-frequency vibration test” shows the wheels of the EV bouncing off the ground, without disturbing the calmness of the interior.

The Nio ET9 premiered last December as a luxury flagship model set to rival the likes of the Mercedes EQS, BMW i7, Porsche Panamera, Tesla Model S, and Lucid Air. The EV is powered by dual electric motors producing a combined 697 hp (520 kW / 707 PS) and has a 120 kWh battery pack with ultra-fast charging capabilities. Besides the sophisticated active suspension, the model is also equipped with rear-wheel-steering.

Pricing for the Nio ET9 in China starts from ¥800,000 (US$111,140) and the deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2025. Would you buy it over the new Porsche Panamera based on all these fancy tricks?
