American electric vehicle startup Rivian is poised to enter the European market for the first time with the launch of its third consumer vehicle. Smaller in size and more affordable compared to the company’s current offerings, it’s reasonable to assume that the R2 series of EVs will be a better fit for the continent’s roads than the R1 series.

The R1S SUV and the R1T pickup truck have been in production since 2022. Even though Rivian managed to sell 47,200 vehicles in the U.S. last year, the only other market it has entered so far is Canada — and it has encountered issues even there.

However, with the R2, Rivian ill expand to several new countries in Europe, including the UK, a spokesperson told Auto Express. The model will spearhead the brand’s entry into the market, and will take on popular competitors like the Tesla Model Y and the Kia EV6.

Rivian R2 Electric SUV Will Be Sold In Europe Too

The announcement comes on the heels of a teaser for the inaugural R2 model, which will utilize a completely new platform. The teaser disclosed that the R1 series’ distinctive “Stadium Lights,” featuring a horizontal light bar accented with vertical ovals, will be retained in the new series.

Few details regarding the upcoming model have been disclosed, but the automaker previously indicated that the new platform will be significantly simpler than that of the R1, aiming to reduce complexity and cost. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe stated that the R2 platform will feature 60 percent fewer ECUs and a 25 percent shorter wiring harness length compared to the larger model. These alterations are expected to result in substantial savings amounting to thousands of dollars per model.

Rivian has confirmed that it will introduce an R2 model (the initial release is anticipated to be an SUV named the R2S) on March 7. While the timeline for commencing sales in Europe remains uncertain, it’s probable that the company will need to establish new sales infrastructure, a process likely to be time-consuming.

We have also reached out to Rivian to inquire about its plans for Europe and will provide updates on this story as soon as we receive more information.
