At a presentation highlighting its financial results for 2023, Mercedes CEO Ola Kaellenius finally confirmed that the first entry into the automaker’s extremely fancy “Mythos” range of vehicles will arrive next year.
Originally teased in May 2022, the company has never tried too hard to hide the fact that the first car would be based on the SL. Shadow-covered renderings revealed that it would have nacelles behind the occupants’ heads, suggesting that it will be a speedster.
In an Instagram post last year, Mercedes’ head of design, Gorden Wagener, called the car the Concept Mercedes-Maybach SL, and showed that it would have a stand-up Mercedes emblem, a shiny Maybach grille, and a black hood covered in a repeating Maybach badge pattern.

Unfortunately, specific details about the model remain scarce. However, in 2022, Mercedes indicated that vehicles in the Mythos range would be produced in “select numbers”, exclusively available to the most devoted enthusiasts and collectors of Mercedes-Benz.
Given its Maybach branding, it’s reasonable to assume that the Concept Mercedes-Maybach SL won’t be a hardcore track car like the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. Instead, the automaker may aim to strike a delicate balance between performance and luxury, akin to Alpina, which BMW recently integrated into its operations.
However, unlike Alpina’s builds, which don’t really differ much from their BMW twins in terms of design, the Mythos series is expected to showcase a highly customized exterior and interior, evoking the spirit of coachbuilt creations.

That said, brace yourself for some eye-watering price tags on these limited-edition models. Given that the Mythos series is being hailed as the pinnacle of Mercedes luxury and exclusivity, they will surely command a much higher price compared to the regular SL. Currently, the top-tier Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance model reaches $183,000 in the U.S., setting a benchmark for the anticipated pricing of the Mythos series
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until next year to see exactly what Mercedes has planned for the first Mythos model, but all signs point to it being a pretty exciting car.
