The deposit alone for the new second-generation battery replacement for this McLaren P1 costs $35,700

Every McLaren is special but the P1 stands above most models as a true halo car. Now, one is available to whoever is willing to outbid the competition in an auction already in the seven figures. The winner will not only get a special car, but they’ll get the option to buy a replacement battery that’ll cost six figures on its own.
The P1 really needs no introduction. Considered by many to be a true spiritual successor to the F1, it makes over 900 horsepower (671 kW) and sends it all to the rear wheels. Some of that power comes from an electric battery and that detail gets more interesting the deeper one digs. Seeing that this is a 2014 model year hypercar, and how batteries degrade over time, it’s practical to consider how much it’ll cost to replace that battery when the time comes.
Evidently, a previous owner was already thinking about it when they put down a deposit on a replacement back in 2022. That same year, McLaren announced it had developed a second-gen battery pack for the P1 that was substantially lighter than the original. The orders poured in, to the extent that they’re still on backorder almost two years later. The cost of just the deposit for that battery was $35,700.

Back in 2022, McLaren said that the updated battery would cost $156,700. If that’s still true today, it would leave whoever buys this P1 with an additional $121,000 to pay. We’ve all heard of having to pay for some deferred maintenance after buying a used car but in this case, we’re talking new Porsche 911 Carerra 4 money. Thankfully, the battery currently in the car is still in good health, according to the inspection findings.
We suspect the winner will likely take advantage of that deposit and keep their spot in line. It’s the best way to ensure that this McLaren can stay on the road without issue. It has some 4,700 miles on the odometer and a few scratches on the carbon lip spoiler to prove that it’s been out and about.
Beyond those nicks, the McLaren hypercar appears to be in nearly perfect condition. It’s finished in a beautiful MSO Fusion Green with a satin finish on the exposed carbon fiber exterior panels. It’s also offered with a full service history, two keys, the hybrid battery charger, and charger case ($30,000 on their own), and a car cover. As of this writing, it’s already bid up to $1,326,000 on Cars&Bids. It stands to set a new all-time high price on the site once the hammer falls on March 7.
