Spy photographers have caught the redesigned Mercedes EQC on multiple occasions, but now we’re getting our first glimpse at the upcoming AMG variant. However, since Germans can’t leave well enough alone, this could be known as the GLC 53 EV as the EQ moniker is slated to be dropped in the near future.

Nomenclature aside, a heavily camouflaged prototype was spied undergoing testing near the Arctic Circle. While there isn’t much to see, the crossover has a curvaceous front end with a fully enclosed grille that is flanked by sweptback headlights. Further below, we can see what appears to be a more aggressive front bumper with additional intakes.

The sportier styling continues further back as the model rides on a set of stylish AMG wheels. They’re backed up by a beefier braking system that features ventilated discs.

We can also see flush-mounted door handles, streamlined bodywork, and an upward sweeping beltline. They’re joined by a pronounced shoulder line and a gently sloping roof. The model also appears to be riding on a sport-tuned suspension that results in a reduced ride height.

There isn’t much to see out back, but the prototype has an angular rear window, a wraparound spoiler, and temporary taillights. The road-going model could be distinguished by a unique bumper and diffuser, although that remains to be seen.

Little else is known about the crossover at this point, but the model is slated to ride on the MB.EA platform and slot beneath the EQE 53 SUV. The latter starts at $109,300 and has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 617 hp (460 kW / 625 PS) and 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.4 seconds and travel an EPA-estimated 235 miles (378 km) on a single charge.

We can expect to learn more in the months ahead, although the GLC / EQC 53 isn’t expected to be unveiled until 2025 or 2026.
