One of the largest weekly automotive gatherings in Houston, Texas, has announced in an Instagram post that it will permanently ban late-model Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros, Dodge Chargers, and Dodge Challengers from its events.

The decision to permanently ban certain vehicles from the meetup, Coffee and Cars, followed a temporary restriction introduced in November. This move was prompted by incidents of “burnouts and revving” at a recent show hosted by the organization, leading them to urge attendees not to encourage such behavior.

In its announcement post, Coffee and Cars attributed the decision to make the ban permanent to the drivers of the aforementioned “modern muscle cars.” Additionally, it appeared to place blame on attendees, as it shared pictures of fans lining the streets outside its event with their phones out, seemingly anticipating drivers to rev and perform burnouts.

Houston Coffee & Cars Makes Modern American Muscle Car Ban Permanent

“It all starts with you. These are the so called ‘enthusiasts’ who have ruined our car gathering. Don’t complain when we do invitationals from starting today,” Coffee and Cars wrote on Instagram. “All modern muscle cars, Mustangs, Camaro, Charger & Challengers, permanently banned.”

Although Coffee and Cars did not specify an age cutoff for the cars it seeks to ban, the antics of muscle and pony cars from the 2010s and later are well known online. Videos of late model Mustangs crashing into people at meetups are so common that they have become a meme.

The dangers of these high-powered, (generally) rear-wheel-drive vehicles extend beyond shows like these. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that all four of the above-mentioned muscle cars are among the deadliest in America to both their own drivers and other road users.

These factors have led some to support Coffee and Cars in the comments of its post announcing the ban. However, others, such as @mattpollock34, complain that the decision feels like profiling. He claimed that some people misusing vehicles “doesn’t mean all modern muscle car owners are reckless and irresponsible.”
