Lancia’s big return may not include a roadster but that doesn’t stop visual artists from creating their proposals

The new generation of the Lancia Ypsilon kick started the much-anticipated renaissance of the Italian brand that will continue with the Gamma crossover in 2026 and the Delta hatchback in 2028. However, hardcore Lancia fans can’t help but imagine the return of sportier models, like the Stratos, Fulvia, or Aurelia Spider. The latter has materialized in a collection of renderings conjured by Theophilus Chin.
Faced with the absence of a suitable RWD platform in Stellantis’ lineup for such a creation, Chin drew inspiration from the Mazda MX-5 ND, inspired by the past collaboration with the now-discontinued Fiat 124 Spider.The digital artist infused Lancia’s new styling language in a roadster, in a bid to imagine what a modern-day Aurelia Spider would look like.

The rear end is probably the most appealing, featuring round LED taillights and an integrated spoiler. The crossover-style glossy black fenders borrowed from the Lancia Ypsilon are not ideal for a low-slung roadster, but at least they match the mirrors and the windshield frame. At the front, we find the illuminated Calice grille with the split LED headlights mounted at the corner of the long hood. Finally, the fictional renderings have a retractable soft roof.
The original Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider debuted in 1954. The Italian roadster was followed by the slightly improved Aurelia B24 Convertible in 1956, bringing small changes to the exterior design. Both two-door Aurelia derivatives were produced in limited numbers, which means that any surviving example in pristine condition is quite valuable today.
At the moment, a modern drop-top Lancia Aurelia sounds highly unlikely to happen. However, if the Lancia “Renaissance” goes well and brings the desired financial results, the company could consider adding more models to its portfolio – albeit with zero-emission powertrains.
