The Mercedes CLA was conceived as a stylish and affordable sedan, but the new CLA 45 S Edition 1 costs $81,195 before a $1,150 destination charge. That’s patently ridiculous as the outgoing CLS 450 4MATIC began at $76,500 while the E 53 Coupe retailed for $84,500.

So what makes the Edition 1 so special? An eye-catching exterior that features Manufaktur Mountain Grey Magno paint that is contrasted by bright orange accents. The model has also been equipped with AMG graphics and 19-inch matte black wheels that are backed up by red brake calipers.

Buyers will also find AMG Aerodynamics and AMG Night Plus packages. The former adds flics, a more pronounced front splitter, a larger rear spoiler, and a deeper diffuser. The Night Plus package, on the other hand, sees the car equipped with gloss black accents, a dark chrome exhaust, and black badging.

The upgrades continue inside as the special edition has AMG Performance seats with black microfiber upholstery and orange contrast stitching. The seats also wear embroidered headrests that say “CLA 45 S.”

Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S Edition 1 Costs More Than A CLS

Once ensconced in the special seats, drivers will find themselves grabbing onto a leather and microfiber AMG Performance steering wheel. Other highlights include red illumination, special door sill plates, and two-tone aluminum and black trim.

Power is provided by a twin-turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 416 hp (310 kW / 422 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and a standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. This setup enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in four seconds flat.

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S Edition 1 will arrive at dealerships soon and only 25 will be offered in the United States. However, if you’d rather save some dough, you can get a standard CLA 45 S for $65,400.
