  • CATL, the world’s largest EV battery supplier, unveiled its new Shenxing Plus battery with a promised range exceeding 621 miles (1,000 km) on the Chinese testing cycle.
  • The battery achieves this range due to its high energy density (205 Wh/kg) and boasts ultra-fast charging capabilities.
  • The battery giant is also working on a new fast-charging network in China, aiming to become the country’s largest superfast charging service.

Plenty of compelling new electric vehicles have been unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show but CATL, the world’s largest EV battery supplier, has also used the event to unveil its advanced new Shenxing Plus EV battery.

The company’s latest battery uses advanced lithium-iron phosphate with a proprietary 3D honeycomb-shaped material added to the anode, allowing it to boost energy density. The pack also includes new granular gradation technology that places every nanometer particle in the optimal position to improve density. The Shenxing Plus battery also uses a single-piece casing.

CATL says its new battery pack has an energy density of 205 Wh/kg, providing it with a range of over 621 miles (1,000 km) on the Chinese testing cycle. It’s not just the energy density and range of the battery that makes it compelling, but also the promise of ultra-fast charging. With just 10 minutes of charging, the battery can provide 373 miles (600 km) of driving range, roughly equating to 0.62 miles (1 km) of range per one second of charge.

Achieving charging speeds like this was no easy feat. CATL is using a new lithium-ion conductive coating and has expanded the overcurrent area and the capacity of the terminals to dissipate high during high-current charging.

As is often the case with exciting new battery announcements like these, CATL hasn’t provided a timeline for when BEVs will start to hit the market with its new Shenxing Plus battery.

In addition to launching this new battery in Beijing, CATL said it has started constructing its new Shenxing Superfast Charging network, which will become the largest superfast charging service in China. It is also developing a Shenxing supercharging charging vehicle owners club operating in over 600 service outlets, where members will be provided with roadside assistance, battery inspections and maintenance, and other services.
