With the arrival of the BMW XM, many have been speculating what its design would look like if it came to other SUVs in the automaker’s lineup, as the styling will most like make its there at some point. Enter this rendering of a fictional BMW X2 made by digital artist Theottle, which shows the SUV wearing the XM’s polarizing design surprisingly well.
Most of the design’s improvements in this render actually seem to come from removing aspects of the original XM’s styling. This X2 doesn’t have the same awkward trim stripe the XM has running down its shoulder line, nor does it feature the SUV’s egregious wrap-around taillights. The rendering also ditches the XM‘s stacked trapezoidal exhaust pipes, as well as the unusually large rear window that made it appear top-heavy. Swap out the gold trim for a more conventional black or chrome, and you’ve got a solid-looking SUV on your hands.

Overall, what’s left of the XM’s styling just seems to work better on a smaller vehicle with a shorter, rounder front end like the X2. With that being said, based on the latest round of spy shots, we know that the next X2 won’t quite look like this, as it will ditch the hatchback silhouette and instead be going the way of the crossover-coupe like its X4 and X6 siblings. Those spy shots also reveal that it won’t have the angular design of the XM, rather something in between it and the current generation
