The Mercedes-Benz G-Class may have become more of a status symbol in recent years than anything else but it remains an extremely capable off-roader. However, what form could the G-Class have taken if it was launched in 1969, rather than 1979?
To answer that question, Abimelec Design has expertly rendered a classic G-Class that was not derived from a military SUV but instead built from the outset for rich consumers and with a key focus on luxury. The result is very interesting.

The overall shape of the 1969 G-Class is similar to the current one thanks to the square, boxy shape that has become quite timeless. However, the front of the classic G shares very little in common with the current one and takes inspiration from the classic Mercedes-Benz 600 Grosser, sporting a large chrome front grille and quad headlights with chrome surrounds. The front bumper of the G is also finished in chrome.
A number of other design details are fitting for a vehicle from the late 1960’s. These include chrome across the wing mirrors and door handles while the wheels have been lifted from a Mercedes-Benz 280.
While we can’t go back in time to see what a G-Class from the 60’s would have been like to drive, we can look ahead to the future where the G-Class will spawn an all-electric version, dubbed the EQG. This model has been in development for quite some time and is expected to arrive for the 2024 model year.
