Mercedes is readying their electric version of the G-Class, called the EQG, for a launch later this year alongside a potential facelifted ICE model. Now, our spy photographers were able to capture a new prototype of the electric SUV that features new details compared to the ones we’ve seen before.
One of the best things about the EQG is that it doesn’t sacrifice its signature boxy look in the name of aerodynamic efficiency. As a result, Mercedes has been cooking up tricks elsewhere to help the SUV cut through the wind better. The most interesting of these comes in the form of small cutouts on the fenders, while other examples include smoother bodywork and more aerodynamic wheels (the latter of which don’t make an appearance on this prototype).
This is also the first time we’re seeing a prototype fitted with the concept’s square box on the rear cargo door. Unrelated to aerodynamics but still unique to the EQG, this box doesn’t hold a spare tire like the ICE model’s does, but rather the SUV’s charging equipment. On the topic of charging and batteries in general, there’s been no word from Mercedes on any range specs, but they did mention that they will offer an optional extended range pack that uses a special silicon anode chemistry. This will allow for a 20 to 40 percent increase in energy density compared to a traditional battery, which should provide an increase in range for a battery of the same size.
Powering the EQG will be four electric motors — one for each wheel — that make an unknown amount of power, however Mercedes assures us the SUV will have “enormous pulling power and controllability.” This quad-motor setup will allow the EQG to perform tank-style “G-Turns”, in which the motors on the left and right wheels spin in opposite directions to make the vehicle turn in place. Rivian’s R1T and R1S can also perform this trick, as they are also equipped with quad-motor powertrains, and coincidentally, as reported by the Rivian Owners Forum, an R1T was actually spotted at AMG’s HQ last week, most likely serving as a benchmark for Mercedes.
