Official documents filed with the EPA show the real-world testing results of the Rivian R1S Dual Motor with the ‘Large’ battery pack. The automaker’s previous predictions surrounding the range prove to be mostly true. Here’s a breakdown of what the EPA found.
The figures found on an EPA document by a poster over on RivianForums all center around EPA testing of the R1S. Each utilized the dual-motor configuration in harmony with a large 135 kWh battery pack. An R1S with 20-inch wheels had an adjusted range of 305.79 miles (492.12 km).
An R1S fitted with 21-inch wheels ended up with an adjusted range of 348 miles (560 km) and another with 22-inch wheels received a final figure of 352 miles (566 km). Those final two figures are above what Rivian predicted which was 340 miles (547 km) in total. Notably, that 20-inch wheeled R1S was wearing all-terrain tires, accounting for its lower range.

The R1S with the same battery pack and a quad-motor setup has an EPA rating of 321 miles (516 km). That means that going with the dual motor will increase the range by just under 10 percent. Of course, you’ll lose about 135 hp and some of the abilities inherent to quad-motor technology in the tradeoff. The same documents show that all three test vehicles were rated at 708 hp (527 kW), whereas the quad motor R1S features a rating of 835 hp (622).
For those who really need the additional range, the extra power probably isn’t too tough to give up. 708 hp is nothing to sneeze at anyway and an extra ten-ish percent of range isn’t either. Commenters in the Rivian forum had split opinions on the revelation of the Dual Motor’s range. “Rivian never said it would be significantly higher but I still expected a little bigger jump with the dual motor,” said one comment.

“Is one of the conclusions that the new Enduro motors are not particularly efficient?” said another but not everyone was disappointed. Some specifically called out how 22-inch wheels pulling off 340 miles was a big win. Now we just have to wait to see exactly how things come out for the newly released Max Pack.
