Numerous 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, CLS, and AMG GT 4-Door models have been hit with a recall in the United States. The reason? The exit warning system used to alert occupants of approaching pedestrians and other road users, like cyclists, may not function as intended.
A recall notice issued by the car manufacturer reveals that the exit warning system has been incorrectly coded. This means that vehicle occupants may not be warned through the appropriate visual and acoustic cues, increasing the chance of them hitting another road user while parked and opening the door.
A total of 880 vehicles are involved in the recall, all of which are 2023 models that were produced between March 10, 2022, and March 9, 2023. They consist of the Mercedes-Benz E450, E350, AMG E 63 S, E450 Wagon All Terrain, AMG E63 S, E450 Coupe, AMG E53 Coupe, E450 Cabriolet, AMG E53 Cabriolet, CLS 450, AMG GT 53 4-Door, and the AMG GT 43 4-Door.

The Mercedes-Benz safe exit warning system is a subsystem of the Active Blind Spot Assist and the automaker discovered coding issues with it at the end of September last year. It investigated the issue, made the appropriate changes at its factories to update the exit warning system coding parameters, and then set about identifying vehicles in the field affected by the issue. The company is not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, or any reports of injury related to the fault.
Mercedes-Benz started to inform dealerships of the recall on August 18 and will alert owners before October 10. Dealerships will fix the issue by simply updating the coding parameters of the exit warning system on affected vehicles free of charge.
