Ford is now saying the Explorer EV has been delayed so it can be equipped with next-generation battery technology from Volkswagen

It’s good news and bad news for Ford of Europe as the automaker used the Munich Motor Show to showcase the Explorer EV as well as confirm the model is being delayed.
According to Reuters, officials acknowledged earlier reports that production is being pushed back by approximately six months and will now begin next summer. However, they had a slightly different explanation for the delay this time around.
While initial reports suggested regulations were to blame, an official told the publication they’re waiting for a “new generation of Volkswagen battery technology to be available.” The report didn’t elaborate, so there’s no word on any possible range or charging benefits.

That shouldn’t be too surprising as Ford hasn’t said much about the electric Explorer, which is based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform. However, the company has previously said the mid-size crossover will cost less than €45,000 ($48,268), be offered with rear- and all-wheel drive, and be able to go from a 10-80% charge in as little as 25 minutes.

The five-seat Explorer EV has a unique design and will be offered with aerodynamically optimized wheels ranging in sizes from 19- to 21-inches. The interior is minimalist and features a digital instrument cluster as well as a 14.6- or 15-inch infotainment system with a portrait orientation.
While it’s interesting to note that Ford seemingly inflated the size of the display by 0.4 inches in the initial press release, the crossover is slated to come nicely equipped with a heated steering wheel, a dual-zone climate control system, and heated front seats with a massage function on the driver’s side. Customers will also find a wireless smartphone charger as well as an available 10 color ambient lighting system.
Ford was originally slated to begin accepting orders later this year, but that has been pushed back as well. The automaker’s German and UK websites now say orders will begin in the spring of 2024. They go on to note deliveries will begin next summer as noted above.
