The Toyota IMV 0 (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) – also known as the Rangga – is one of the coolest upcoming pickup trucks thanks to its no-frills multi-purpose character. After showcasing various concepts in Indonesia last August, Toyota is now introducing additional variants of the IMV 0 at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, further fueling our anticipation for the forthcoming production version expected to debut next year.

Toyota’s booth will include two real-life concepts based on the IMV 0. The “Mobility Cafe” will offer drinks to visitors thanks to the food truck conversion, while the “Capsule Bar” will allow them to win miniature cars if they find the correct answer to a simple question. However, the most intriguing versions of the truck are the ones displayed in the official renderings.

The most eye-catching model is a rugged pickup featuring an extended cab, rugged tires, an off-road bumper equipped with an LED bar and recovery points, and a roof rack for carrying gear. The truck sends strong Land Cruiser vibes thanks to the retro styling of the IMV 0 donor vehicle, and would make a great case for adventure-seekers. While this is only a rendering for now, we hope that Toyota will eventually bring this concept to life as a full-size model in the future.

Another captivating concept is the overlander variant, featuring an elongated, enclosed cabin. The extended rear overhang and increased height provide ample space for a well-equipped living area, offering the possibility of including all the comforts of a camper. This overlander model also showcases off-road tires, generous ground clearance, and front-end protective accessories, enhancing its versatility for off-road expeditions.

Toyota also presented a disaster relief variant adorned with Red Cross emblems, as well as two sporty low-rider pickup concepts. For some odd reason, Toyota pixelated the rims in some renderings, while others appear to have been generated with the assistance of software. Regardless of the presentation, Toyota’s abundance of ideas for the future of the IMV 0 is the most noteworthy aspect of this showcase.

Last but not least, Toyota will also bring the bare-bones chassis-cab version of the IMV 0 at the Japan Mobility Show 2023. The automaker suggests that owners will be able to mount the desired rear section to the chassis using bolts and nuts, making all types of conversions easier.

The Toyota IMV 0 – originally introduced in concept form in December 2022 – measures 5,300 mm (208.7 inches) long, 1,785 mm (70.3 inches) wide, and 1,740 mm (68.5 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 3,085 mm (121.5 inches). This means it is about the same size as the existing Toyota HiLux, sharing an identical wheelbase. The truck is based on ladder-frame underpinnings with leaf spring suspension at the rear axle. Reports suggest it will be offered with diesel, petrol, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains, although Toyota has yet to release detailed specifications.

The production version of the Toyota IMV 0 is anticipated to make its debut in 2024, targeting emerging markets with a price point below that of the HiLux. Stay tuned for more details in the months ahead.
