The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was discontinued in 2021, with the Tonale compact SUV serving as an indirect replacement. While Alfa Romeo is left without a hatchback in its current lineup, a proper successor to the Giulietta could be in the cards for the future as hinted at by its CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato.

Speaking to Autocar, Imparato said: “I’m not sure that we don’t make money, even on a hatchback”, leaving a window of possibility for Alfa’s return in the traditional hatchback segment. The CEO didn’t get into specifics but his comment makes us believe that a new Giulietta might be under consideration. Of course, this scenario requires that Alfa Romeo returns to profitability, in order to get the financial freedom required to invest in other segments.

Earlier this year, digital artist Theottle created a set of renderings depicting a next-gen premium compact model based on Alfa Romeo’s current styling language. While those illustrations were thought to be pure fiction at the time, it seems that there could be some truth to them in the long term. Such an offering would make for a direct competitor to the likes of the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, DS 4, and Mercedes A-Class, although the latter will be reportedly axed after 2025.

A possible return of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta would most likely be based on the STLA Medium architecture, as this is the most fitting choice for the compact and midsize segments. The same platform will underpin numerous Stellantis models in the next few years, including the upcoming Lancia Delta that has been confirmed for 2027, and the successors of the Peugeot 308 and Opel Astra compact hatchbacks. The first model to get it is the new Peugeot E-3008 SUV.

Alfa Romeo has pledged to become an EV-only brand by 2027, meaning that a new hatchback would have to be fully electric in order to make sense for the future. According to Stellantis, the STLA Medium architecture can be fitted with 73 kWh or 98 kWh battery packs offering up to 700 km (435 miles) of WLTP range. As for the powertrain, the platform is compatible with single-motor FWD and dual-motor AWD configurations, producing anywhere in the region of 215-382 hp (160-285 kW / 218-387 PS).

It seems that Alfa Romeo is exploring several options for its future lineup over the sedan and SUV segments.
