Production of the Polestar 4 will start in China next week but that hasn’t stopped the firm from planning well into the future, confirming that it will also be built at a factory in Busan, South Korea starting in the second half of 2025.

The firm has reached a contract manufacturing deal with Geely and Renault Korea Motors to build the Polestar 4 at Renault’s local plant in Busan. Examples built at this site will be destined for North America and the South Korean market. This site is located close to ports, employs approximately 2,000 people, and is aiming to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 before becoming carbon neutral in 2040.

“We’re very happy to take the next step in diversifying our manufacturing footprint together with Geely Holding and Renault Korea Motors, a company that shares our focus on quality and sustainability,” Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath said. “With Polestar 3 on-track to start production in Chengdu, China in early 2024 and in South Carolina, USA, in the summer of 2024, we will soon have manufacturing operations in five factories, across three countries, supporting our global growth ambitions.”

The Polestar 4 was unveiled as the third of the brand’s battery-electric vehicles in April this year, some six months after the larger Polestar 3 SUV was previewed. However, delays have pushed back the launch of the 3 and it will now be the Polestar 4 that is the brand’s second BEV to reach the hands of customers. The first examples are scheduled for delivery in China in December.

“Polestar 4 will be the first full battery electric vehicle produced in the Busan plant, symbolizing Renault Korea Motors renewal and our ambitious vision for the future,” added Renault Korea Motors chief executive Stéphane Deblaise. “We are very proud of this new partnership and grateful to the Polestar brand for their trust.”

Shoppers will be offered the Polestar 4 in at least two different flavors. All versions are underpinned by a 102 kWh battery pack and the base model has a 272 hp and 253 lb-ft (343 Nm) electric motor driving the rear wheels. A Long Range Dual Motor version will also be offered with a combined 544 hp and 506 lb-ft (686 Nm) of torque.
