The Mercedes EQG / G-Class EV is inching closer to production as the company has released new photos of the electric SUV and hinted it’s coming “soon.”

While the automaker is keeping details under wraps, they described it as a “true off-road icon” and the “best of all worlds.” Mercedes went on to say it’s a “real G” that blends “sophistication and advanced electric technology.”

The model was previewed by the EQG concept and closely echoes its conventionally-powered counterpart, which itself is getting a facelift. That being said, there are a few telltale clues this isn’t your run-of-the-mill G.

The biggest is the square ‘spare tire carrier,’ which is presumably a lockable box like on the concept. A closer inspection also reveals a handful of aerodynamic styling tweaks including special wheels and small slits in the rear fender flares. We can also expect a fully enclosed grille with a boxy design.

Previous spy photos have shown the interior will be slightly different than today’s model as it will adopt a new steering wheel, a revamped center console, and a revised center stack with new switchgear. Some of these changes will presumably be shared with the facelifted ICE variant, but the G-Turn button will be unique to the EV and enable it to perform ‘tank turns.’

Mercedes has been coy on specifics, but the EQG is slated to have a quad motor powertrain with “enormous pulling power and controllability.” We can also expect an optional extended range battery, which has a silicon anode chemistry that promises a 20-40% increase in energy density. This should result in a “significant” increase in range.

While plenty of questions remain, you shouldn’t expect to see the model anytime soon as Mercedes has previously said it will be introduced until next year.
