Toyota Stops GR Supra Sales In UK, No Restart Date In Sight

Automotive enthusiasts in Britain may want to brace themselves for disappointing news, as sales of the Toyota GR Supra have been halted. Toyota’s website now informs customers that the car is “currently unavailable.

Unfortunately, the GR Supra’s fate in the market is unclear. Toyota said that it has reached maximum allocation for orders this year, but there is no indication as to when it will go on sale again.

Even worse, there are rumors suggesting that the automaker hasn’t made a final decision on whether the sports car will make a return, as reported by Autocar magazine. This situation could potentially leave Toyota fans in the U.K. with the GR86 as their sole sports car choice, as only existing stock of the GR Yaris remains available in the market.

When it was on sale, the GR Supra was available with either a 2.0-liter inline four, or a 3.0-liter straight-six. Both were sourced from BMW, which also provided the platform for the latest generation of the legendary sports car.

This might be a particularly terrible time for UK enthusiasts to lose access to the Supra, since a new, high-performance model appears to be in development. Spied testing at the Nurburgring, it is believed that it will be called the Supra GRMN, and that it will borrow the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter engine from the BMW M2, which would give it at least 453 hp (338 kW/453 PS).

However, Toyota’s plans for selling the model in specific markets are currently unknown. The reasons behind the uncertainty about offering any Supra in the U.K. appear unrelated to the internal combustion engine under its hood.

The automaker recently said that it had not given up on combustion-powered sports cars and that, in the short term, it has no immediate plans to stop selling vehicles that consume fossil fuels. In the longer-term, it hopes that hydrogen combustion engines will provide a greener alternative.
