Mercedes-Benz has provided the world with a detailed preview of its new MB.OS infotainment system at CES 2024 which will be introduced by a production version of the Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA-Class and rolled out across a suite of other models based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA).

One of the key features of the new operating system is the implementation of the new MBUX Virtual Assistant. This new system is said to offer the most “human-like interface” of any Mercedes-Benz and uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) and proactive intelligence. According to the carmaker, the MBUX Virtual Assistant can offer “helpful suggestions based on learned behavior and situational context” like playing the latest news in the morning or starting the driver’s preferred massage programme at the end of a working day.

This assistant is underpinned with four so-called ‘personality traits,’ consisting of natural, Predictive, Personal, and Empathetic, and aims to replicate what it is like having a conversation with a friend. As such, the keyword ‘Hey Mercedes’ no longer needs to be said to initiate the assistance, and the system can answer questions and seek clarification by asking “intelligent questions” of its own. The MBUX Virtual Assistant also uses a star avatar on the central infotainment display to express different moods and states of being, like when it is calm or excited.

The new MB.OS also premieres a new MBUX Surround Navigation system. This setup uses advanced 3D graphics to provide occupants with a detailed map of the world and can display different types of traffic, including cars, van trucks, cyclists, and even pedestrians close to the road. Additionally, the system superimposes route guidance onto the display to make navigation easier than ever before.

There are plenty of other new features found in the MB.OS system. For example, video streaming services will be upgraded with the RIDEVU service from Sony Pictures Entertainment while a host of arcade-style video games will be implemented thanks to a partnership with Antstream.
