BMW has been very open about its plans to launch an all-electric M3 based around its Neue Klasse platform. What it hasn’t been so open about is the future of the combustion-powered M3 and whether or not it will stick around for much longer. A new report has shed some additional light on what’s in store for the traditional M3.

A post in the BMW Blog claims that BMW will release a next-generation version of the M3, dubbed the G84, around 2027 or 2028. This new model is tipped to continue using the existing S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder. Updates will have to be made to this engine to ensure it is Euro 7 compliant and while one may assume BMW could do this by hybridizing it, there’s no indication that is what it is planning.

Few other technical details about the G84 M3 are known at this stage but it will probably be based on the same CLAR modular platform as other 3-Series models. Unfortunately, it won’t be joined by a new M4. While we would also love to see the two-door M4 survive into another generation, a new combustion-powered successor is not thought to be in the works, sources say.

Earlier this year, BMW unveiled a facelifted version of the M4 and in the coming months, a facelifted M3 will be launched. These two models will remain in production until the spring of 2027.

It’s too early to say how long the G84 M3 will stick around and its lifecycle may depend on the popularity of the electric M3, as well as emissions and fuel economy regulations. Whatever the case is, it will likely be the final M3 with a combustion engine.

As for the electric M3, BMW has confirmed the Neue Klasse platform that underpins it can handle up to 1,000 kW (1,341 hp) and support up to four individual motors. While BMW hasn’t confirmed how much grunt the M3 will have, it’s safe to assume it will easily outperform the ICE model.
