  • Approximately 211,000 vehicles worldwide need to be repaired including 55,000 in the United States.
  • The issue involves potential water leakage into the electronic rear door latches, which could cause a short circuit and unexpected door openings, even while driving.
  • While a permanent fix is being developed, owners are advised to keep their automatic door locking feature enabled.

Owners of 2023 and 2024 Toyota Prius and Prius Prime in the United States and other markets will soon need to take their cars in for repairs after it was revealed they could have faulty rear door latches.

On Wednesday, Toyota announced a recall of approximately 55,000 of its 2023-2024 Prius and Prius HEV hybrid electric vehicles in the U.S. Additionally, a further 156,000 vehicles are being recalled in Japan, Canada, Europe, and Asia.

The automaker says that in Prius and Prius Prime models manufactured between November 2022 and April 2024, there is a possibility of water leakage into the electronic rear door latches. This could result in a short circuit, potentially leading to unexpected door openings if the doors are not securely locked. Such occurrences may even happen while the vehicle is in motion.

The recall was first confirmed for the Japanese market where there are more than 135,000 examples that need to be fixed. It has since been confirmed that approximately 55,000 vehicles in the U.S. may also be impacted and will also be recalled. All up, Toyota is recalling roughly 211,000 Prius and Prius Prime models worldwide.

Toyota has not yet confirmed a fix for the problem. While it works on a solution, it says owners should keep the automatic locking feature enabled, ensuring the doors automatically lock when the vehicle is moved out of park. Customers will then receive more information about the recall in early June and Toyota expects to replace the rear door opener switches free of charge.

CarScoops has reached out to Toyota in the U.S. seeking additional information about the impending recall.

Owners of 2023-2024 Prius and Prius Prime models in the U.S. can head over to the carmaker’s online recall portal and enter their VIN to see if their vehicle is involved in this recall, or any other recall for that matter.
