Next-Gen Volvo S90 Flagship Sedan Envisioned By Independent Designer

Next-Gen Volvo S90 Flagship Sedan Envisioned By Independent Designer

This story includes speculative renderings of a future Volvo S90 created by independent digital artist Theottle, which are neither related to nor endorsed by Volvo.

Volvo showcased its future design language with the 2021 Recharge Concept but we have yet to see any production models following this path. While the evolved brand identity will likely debut in an SUV / crossover, digital artist Theottle thought of applying it to the S90, showing how a new generation of the flagship sedan could look like.

The three-quarter renderings (front and rear) are based on the current Volvo S90, retaining the same proportions and stance. However, all body panels have been digitally redesigned, incorporating a new type of surfacing as dictated by the Volvo Recharge Concept.

At the front, the LED headlights with “Thor’s hammer” graphics are slimmer, while the grille and the front bumper look cleaner than before, with considerably less use of chrome. The toned-up fenders put greater emphasis on the aero-style alloy-wheels, while the flush door handles contribute to less drag. Finally, at the back we find full-width LED taillights surrounding the sculpted tailgate, and a simplistic rear bumper. Overall, the fictional facelifted S90 looks neat, sending some Polestar vibes.

Despite the fact that SUVs account for 75 percent of Volvo’s total sales, the automaker remains committed to the sedan and estate bodystyles. However, this doesn’t mean that Volvo will continue both the S60/V60 and S90/V90 lines, as a single model could serve as a replacement for both. In any case, next-gen vehicles must be EV-ready, since Volvo has pledged to become an all-electric brand by 2030.

The current Volvo S90 debuted back in 2016, with a mild facelift following in 2020. It was one of the first models that introduced us to Volvo’s new era in terms of platforms, tech, and styling, paving the way for the rest of the lineup.
