Will other Tesla customers have similar luck in asking the carmaker to pass on recent price cuts?

Tesla’s recent price cuts have been welcomed by new buyers but upset many who placed orders just before the cuts were made. However, at least one customer who placed an order before the cuts has claimed to have been retroactively granted a discount.
The unnamed customer recently reached out to Business Insider and revealed that he placed an order for a Tesla Model Y in July 2022 at a price of $72,440. Soon after Tesla announced dramatic price cuts earlier this month, the man reached out to Tesla through its online chat, asking for a price reduction in his order to reflect the new price.
Initially, the representative he spoke with said that such a price cut couldn’t be made but the next day, he received an email informing him that the price of his Model Y had been cut to $60,440. While an image of this email hasn’t been released, Business Insider says it has seen a screenshot of the email.
It’s not clear what prompted Tesla to pass on the price cut to the customer in question but it could encourage other buyers to also reach out to the automaker to have the new price passed on to them. At worst, Tesla representatives will simply deny the request, so it could be worth a shot.
Tesla’s price cuts in the U.S. mean that some cars now cost around 20 per cent less than they did. For example, an entry-level Tesla Model Y is available from $52,990 having previously been sold for $65,990. The price cut also makes the electric SUV eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit, effectively resulting in a $20,500 discount.
