Skoda’s CEO, Klaus Zellmer, confirmed that the Enyaq successor will be the first Skoda to benefit from the new underpinnings

While the Skoda Enyaq just got upgraded with more power, longer range, and faster charging, the Czech automaker is already working on the next generation. The new EV is expected to arrive in 2028 or in 2029, moving from the current MEB underpinnings to VW Group’s new SSP architecture.
The introduction of the new platform with the Enyaq’s successor was confirmed by Klaus Zellmer, Skoda’s CEO who spoke to Autocar at the presentation of the new Kodiaq. Zellmer also confirmed that the next-gen Enyaq will be produced at the Mlada Boleslav plant in the Czech Republic, as with the current model.

While it is too early to talk about styling, it is safe to assume that the next-gen Skoda Enyaq will incorporate the Czech automaker’s latest design language called “Modern Solid”. This means it will look similar to the 2022 Skoda Vision 7S concept which served as a base for our speculative rendering. However, the Enyaq successor will be slightly smaller, coming with a 5-seater cabin instead of the concept’s 7-seater layout. It remains to be seen if Skoda will continue offering the Enyaq in SUV and coupe-SUV forms as is the case with the current generation.

The modular SSP architecture will eventually underpin 80% of VW Group models including the next-gen EV-only VW Golf hatchback. It is expected to bring significant advancements in terms of technology, autonomous driving, range, and output compared to its MEB predecessor. It will also be cheaper to produce, resulting in more affordable EVs that will roughly match the price of their ICE-powered equivalents.
While we don’t have detailed specifications for the 800V battery packs, the same report adds that they will offer ultra-fast charging capabilities, going from 10-80% in an average of 12 minutes. For comparison, the current Skoda Enyaq needs 35 minutes for the same amount of charging.
The Skoda Enyaq was introduced in 2020, meaning that the expected 2028 or 2029 debut of the second generation is consistent with the usual model cycles within the VW Group. As with the current generation, we expect the EV’s specifications to be largely shared with the successors of the VW ID.4/ID.5, Audi Q4 e-tron/ Q4 e-tron Sportback, and Cupra Tavascan.
